On the first day of the route, you'll discover the jaw-dropping archeological town of Olympia, the original location of the Olympic Games. On the way, the route takes you to the coastal town of Nafplion, where you'll explore the impressive fortress and gorgeous old town and enjoy a delicious Greek lunch. Then, it's time for Olympia - a site that has left an impression on me every time I think about it, and every time the Olympic Games come around.
You'll get a chance to see the incredible historical site where the first games took place before checking out the Archeological museum. Finally, you'll drive to Pyrgos for dinner and a comfortable night's rest.

Fortress of Palamidi
Your first stop from Athens will be to the coastal town of Nafplion known for, known for its beauty, sights and beneficial location of being near some great swim spots.
Compared to the other sights on this route, this town didn't blow my mind away, but it had a nice local feeling and was s great spot to rest. You can first visit the Fortress of Palamidi, which is a well-preserved historical landmark and offers great views inside and onto the below landscape. There are some stairs to climb here, so bring some good shoes.

After your visit to that fortress, drive down the mountain to reach Akronauplia, the oldest part of the city. This old-town part used to be it's own city until Nafplion is to combine into one. Here you can see wonderful sea views and walks among gorgeous streets.

Olympia is the site of the original Olympic Games and hosts monuments, tracks and other structures for specific sports. It showcases where it all began with magnificent ruins that make your jaw drop as you quickly understand why the games have always been so important.

Archaeological Museum of Olympia
After visiting the main archeological site, you can head to the museum next door, which hosts all the excavated antiquities and monuments. Here, you can get a closer and more intimate look at the fascinating structures.
For me, this perfectly complimented the site because it showcased the statues, columns and structrues that had been taken away. The museum is open until 8 pm with tickets at the door - you can find more information on their website.
