    Thunderbird Lodge Lake Tahoe

    History
The Thunderbird Lodge was a summer residence dating back to the 1930s. It's now a preserved landmark with tours offered to the general public. A relic of a distant era, the six-acre property is home to multiple structures, from the main residence to a boathouse with up-close picturesque views of the water.
Seventy-five–minute tours of the estate are offered at 10am (with arrival requested 15 minutes early) on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday mornings, spring through fall. Private tours can be arranged by special request by calling 775-832-8750 (ext. 0) well in advance. You'll see numerous buildings throughout the property (as well as a vintage wooden speedboat) and learn about the eccentricities of the original, reclusive owner.
If a tour can't be arranged, consider a visit to Chimney Beach as a backup plan. The parking lot is about a mile south on Highway 28 with a short hike through a forest to the beach, which provides similar lakeside views to what you'd find at Thunderbird.

    World-Famous The Clown Motel

    Fun
It's hard to pass through Tonopah without stopping at the "world famous" (or infamous) Clown Motel. It has 31 rooms with a scary, creepy clown theme that's only enhanced with a location next to an old cemetery. If you don't plan to stay the night, just stop by and visit the museum and gift shop. You may take home an unexpected souvenir on this road trip.

    Hometown Pizza

    Food
It's not fancy, but Hometown Pizza is a reliable destination for those looking for scratch-made pies or savory chicken wings. Take an order to go and eat in the car if you're behind on time. The pizzas come in four sizes, all with an addictive thick-and-chewy crust. The one with cheesesteak toppings is a popular locals' favorite. If you prefer a lighter meal, try the salad bar.

    Happy Burro Chili & Beer

    Food
Pull over in Beatty. The old mining community near Death Valley is a friendly, welcoming place to fill up on gas and stretch your legs. The Happy Burro feels like an Old West saloon that hasn't changed much since the glory days of Beatty's gold and silver rush.
The kitchen is proud of its homemade chili recipe, so request a taste if you're still hungry after all that pizza. Otherwise, a cold draft beer will do the trick. Don't worry. The Happy Burro stays open until 11pm daily, so you have plenty of time.
